*Cienega alum Nick Gonzales of the Pittsburgh Pirates is batting .438 with two run home runs in the last week*

Cienega grad Nick Gonzales of the Pittsburgh Pirates hit a three-run home run Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers a day after achieving his first five-hit game, going 5 for 5 against the Brewers. Gonzales has batted 14 of 32 (.438) with three doubles, two home runs, and seven RBIs in the last week.
Former Sahuarita right-hander Ian Mejia had his fifth outing at least six scoreless innings following Tuesday night’s eight-inning gem for Double-A Columbus (Ga.) (Atlanta Braves) in a 2-0 win over Biloxi (Miss.) (Milwaukee Brewers). He tallied only 85 pitches (five hits allowed with seven strikeouts and no walks) with former Arizona pitcher Austin Smith needing 12 pitches to retire Biloxi in the ninth inning.
Former Arizona pitchers Gil Luna and Vince Vannelle are reunited as relievers with Single-A+ Winston-Salem (N.C.) of the Chicago White Sox organization. Luna was assigned to Winston-Salem on Monday after spending a month working out in Phoenix and pitching for the White Sox’s rookie-league team there after he was activated from the injury list. Luna pitched an inning of relief for Winston-Salem on Tuesday after Vannelle pitched three hitless innings in a 6-2 loss to Greensboro (N.C.) of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Their former Arizona teammate Randy Labaut is with Greensboro on a rehabilitation assignment. He did not pitch Tuesday.

Former Arizona standout Kevin Newman of the Los Angeles Angels is on paternity leave with the birth of his third child. He’ll likely miss the entirety of the Angels’ three-game home series against the Boston Red Sox before returning for the weekend set versus the Washington Nationals.
Former Arizona third baseman Tony Bullard was activated from the injured list Tuesday after being out for almost a month. He has rejoined Double-A Pensacola (Fla.) of the Miami Marlins organization.
