Arizona beat Hawaii 4-1 in the first game of the High School Baseball National Championship Series taking place in Omaha, Nebraska. Made up of 19 players from Arizona, including three from Southern Arizona, the team (1-0) will play Nebraska (0-1) and Kansas (1-0) today before bracket play starts on Sunday.
Kansas beat Nebraska 5-3 yesterday by scoring two runs in the sixth inning and another in the seventh. Arizona scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and more in the fifth to hold off Hawaii. Casteel junior Baylor Denny hit a two-RBI double to set the tone on offense. Canyon del Oro pitcher Regen Mazura (1-0) picked up eight strikeouts in five innings of work for the win.
Southern Arizona Player of the Year, outfielder Colton Raetzman of Salpointe, had two at bats and Canyon del Oro senior catcher Francisco Rivero Jr. did not see field action.
