Whereas Desert View sophomore running back Jaylee Abraham is the force behind the Jaguars’ unbeaten run through eight games, senior quarterback Ryan Vasavilbaso is the calming influence.
Vasavilbaso’s steady, efficient play has provided Desert View the balance it needs to keep defenses guessing.
An important element to Desert View’s school-record 8-0 start is the Jaguars averaging 415.9 yards of total offense a game — 239.4 passing and 176.5 rushing.
Vasavilbaso, 6-foot-1 and 165 pounds, is completing 70.3 percent of his passes (116 of 165) for 1,534 yards with 16 touchdowns and only two interceptions.
He is a perfect complement to Abraham, who has 1,179 rushing yards on 109 carries with 22 touchdowns.
In Friday’s 48-7 win at Canyon del Oro, Vasavilbaso completed 16 of 27 pass attempts for 244 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. It was the fifth straight game that he passed for at least 200 yards.
For his performance in the victory over the Dorados, which continues his impressive run this season, Vasavilbaso is the APS Digital Print/Frog & Firkin Player of the Week for Week 9.
