Pima Community College’s men’s soccer team went 7-1 in October, a run that helped them qualify for the NJCAA Region I, Division II championship match Wednesday at Phoenix College.

A constant to the Aztecs’ success is former Salpointe Catholic standout Leo Gutierrez, who made seven goals and produced five assists in October (giving him 19 points in the month).

Gutierrez, who was part of a state championship team at Salpointe all four of his years at the school, leads Pima in goals (20) and points (46). The totals are well ahead of the next player. Nogales graduate Robert Castaneda is behind Gutierrez in goals (eight) and points (20).

Second-seeded Pima (16-2) will play at No. 1 Phoenix College (17-1) on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Gutierrez scored a goal when the Aztecs gave Phoenix College its lone defeat, 3-2 at the West Campus Aztec Field on Oct. 4.

For his performance in October, and overall in Pima’s highly successful season, Gutierrez is the Jet Sports Training Male Athlete of the Month.
