Marana senior second baseman Bella Corona, who has signed with Fresno State, is a significant reason why the Tigers are 21-2 overall and ranked No. 4 among 6A schools in the state.
Corona, who plays for her father George, Marana’s coach, is batting .500 with 11 home runs, 10 doubles and 34 RBIs.
She is approaching 200 hits and 200 RBIs in a career with 173 hits and 172 RBIs. Also in her career, she is batting .494 with 55 doubles, 36 home runs and 10 triples.
In the month of March, when Marana was 12-2, Corona batted 22 of 40 (.550) with eight doubles, seven home runs and 22 RBIs.
Her production in March, putting the Tigers in first place in the 6A South standings, merits her the Jet Sports Training Female Athlete of the Month. Marana is 2-0 in the early going and Tucson and Sunnyside are each 1-1.
One more win for Marana will give the Tigers a 22nd victory in a season for only the second time in the last 12 years. Corona’s senior leadership has a lot to do with that achievement.
She played travel ball with Thundercats NXT, coached by Arizona great Laura Espinoza-Watson.
