Pueblo senior America Cazares’ month of January included the two top scoring performances in state history of a player at a big school (4A to 6A).
Playing for the Warriors, who are a 5A program, Cazares followed a 62-point performance against Desert View with a 64-point outburst against Buena eight days later.
The 64 points was one off the state record of 65 set by Diane Beecroft of 2A school Antelope in a game against Bagdad in the 1977-78 season.
Cazares, a wing player bound for Pima Community College, averaged 41.1 points in seven games in January. Pueblo won all seven of those games and is 19-4 overall and 6-0 in the 5A Southern. The Warriors are No. 2 among 5A teams and No. 8 in the Open Division.
Her average of 33.0 points a game this season ranks No. 1 in the state and No. 10 nationally.
Her 692 points this season has her at 2,718 points, which surpasses the 2,680 points scored by Alyssa Brown of Sahuaro from 2017-21 for second-most in the state’s history.
She trails only former Catalina Foothills and Arizona standout Julie Brase, a granddaughter of the late Lute Olson. Brase, now an assistant at Arizona under Becky Burke, totaled 2,913 points for the Falcons from 1994-98.
For Cazares’ performance in January, she has earned the Jet Sports Training Female Athlete of the Month honor.
