
Pima Community College’s Adrianna Machado pitched a complete-game shutout and Clarissa Figueroa and Julissa Lopez each had two RBIs to lead the No. 1 Aztecs to a 7-0 victory Thursday over No. 4 Scottsdale in an NJCAA Region I, Division II first round game at West Campus Aztec Field.
Pima (45-7) will host No. 2 South Mountain (45-11) in the semifinal game at noon Friday. South Mountain defeated Phoenix 3-1 on Thursday. The South Mountain-Pima winner will advance to Saturday’s championship round at noon.
The loser will play an elimination game at 3 p.m. against the winner of Friday’s 9 a.m. game between Scottsdale (22-30) and No. 3 Phoenix (31-12).
Pima and South Mountain split the six games they played against each other in the regular season.
The Aztecs got on the board against Scottsdale in the third inning when Figueroa (Mountain View) hit a sacrifice fly that scored Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside), who led off the inning with a single.
Lopez (Tucson) hit an RBI single to increase the lead to 2-0. Izabel Rodriguez (Walden Grove) scored on the play. She hit a single earlier in the inning.
Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside) walked with the bases loaded in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 3-0.
Pima pulled away with four runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by Figueroa’s RBI single and Lopez’s sacrifice fly. The Aztecs also scored a couple of runs off errors.
The Aztecs did not commit an error, supporting the effective pitching of Machado (Canyon del Oro).
Machado (17-3) scattered nine hits, struck out five and walked three.
Figueroa finished 1 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs.
Rodriguez, Figueroa, and Lopez-Bedoy each had two runs for the Aztecs.
