Ten people missed their chance to survive by not making a selection in this site’s “Survive and Advance Contest” and a majority of others picked Utah to defeat Oregon State in Salt Lake City last Saturday.
Only four people believed Oregon State coach Mike Riley would engineer the surprising victory. The Beavers, who lost to FCS power Eastern Washington to start the season, stunned Utah 51-48 in overtime.

“Riley’s teams ALWAYS get better as the season goes on!!” Martin-Rude wrote as his reason for taking the Beavers.
This week the final four contestants will pick the outcome of the Arizona State-Stanford outcome. It is the only Pac-12 game on the schedule. Will ASU continue the streak of road teams emerging victorious? In the two Pac-12 games this season, Washington State beat host USC 10-7 and visiting Oregon State outlasted Utah.
The 23 contestants have an overall record of 4-32 because of the two upsets.
Here is a breakdown of the rules:
— Contestants must pick the winner of one Pac-12 game each week. It is their lock of the week. This week the four eligibile contestants must pick between ASU and Stanford since it’s the only conference game. If their pick wins, they advance to the next week. If the team loses, they are eliminated (unless all participants lose this week).
— Contestants can pick a Pac-12 team only twice in the season. That’s the limit. Twice. So if a contestant picks Oregon or Stanford the first two chances they have, good luck the rest of the season. The remaining contestants have picked USC and Oregon State. They can pick USC and Oregon State only one more time.
— Tie-breaking system: The margin difference is the tie breaker. If two or more contestants somehow last until the end of the season without getting eliminated, the margin will serve as the tie-breaker. For example, if a contestant predicted Oregon State to beat Utah by seven points, the point difference is 10 (the Beavers won by three). The person with the closest overall margin in the end wins.
— If the entire field loses their pick, everybody still alive advances to the following week by default, such was the case Saturday.
— If a contestant advances and then misses making a selection the following week, he or she is eliminated. Picks must be made before kickoff.
— Those eligible to participate MUST ENTER THEIR PICK IN THE FACEBOOK COMMENTARY SECTION AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST and weekly posts that update results. An example of a pick: “Stanford by 10 over ASU”. That’s it. If you want to comment about your reason for the pick, feel free. If a person does not pick a margin with their pick, they will be charged the total actual points. Example: You pick Stanford without a margin and the Cardinal wins 31-23, you will be charged 54 points (the amount of points in the game). If you pick Stanford by 10 and the Cardinal wins 24-21, you are only charged seven points (the difference in margin). The lowest margin difference wins the tie-breaker.
