Catalina Foothills softball standout Carys Lynch earned a spot on the GB Under-18 Women’s Team the British Softball Federation announced on Thursday but the announcement came on the heels of a canceled summer season. Still, the British Softball Federation wanted a way to recognize the selected athletes according to a release:
“Although they will not be training together or playing in any competitions this summer, the GB Under-18 Women’s Team is the latest to announce the selections they had made for the 2020 season so that the selected athletes can be recognized.
Until recently, team staff had held out hope that the team could attend an Under-18 event in July in California to start the preparation process for next year’s European Under-18 Championship, and the selection announcement was delayed until that was resolved. But a decision was finally taken on 22 May that the state of the pandemic here and in the United States made playing in that competition impossible.”
Lynch earned a spot on the GB Under-16 Women’s Fastpitch Team last year with a strong possibility of making the Under-18 squad.
“I’m so grateful to have been selected for the Great Britain National 18u team,” Lynch said. “It’s disappointing but understandable that they would put our safety first and I can only hope to get the chance to play for the organization again.”
Former Ironwood Ridge standout Diana Nisbett earned a spot on the 2020 GB Under-22 Women’s Team under the same conditions. Nisbett is now a sophomore at Midland University. She batted .350 with four RBI as a freshman in the shortened season.
Lynch batted .371 in the 12 games the Falcons were able to play.
