With their full roster back in action, the Canyon del Oro Dorados (4-1) had all phases of the game clicking in a 49-6 win over the Catalina Foothills Falcons (2-3}.
With the victory over the Falcons, Dorados head coach Dustin Peace is one win away from hitting the 100-win mark in his head coaching career. Win number 99 was an impressive one.
“We’ve been working hard, kids been working hard about learning about our opponent, respecting our opponents, thats a good football team. We had a great week of preparation kids are doing all the extra things. Then to see it come to life and execute how coaches kind of invisioned on saturdays when your winning on the board. To see it all happen for us to play a complete game it was awesome.”
Catalina Foothills received the kickoff and started the first drive of the game on their 34-yard line.
Three plays later, Dorados junior cornerback/free safety Chance Cassel intercepted Falcons junior quarterback Austin Bourn.
A 47-yard pass from senior quarterback Caden Goldtooth (six of six for 162 yards) to senior wide receiver Daylon Beck (four reception for 136 yard and one touchdown) put the Dorados at the Falcons two-yard line. On the next play, junior running back Kayden Luke (thirteen carries for 124 yards and four touchdowns) jogs across the goal line for a Canyon del Oro touchdown, putting the Dorados up 7-0 with 7:27 left in the first quarter.
Kayden Luke put another six points on the board with an 11-yard big man run into the end zone. His second touchdown in the first quarter.
Luke grabbed his third touchdown on a 3-yard run to put Canyon del Oro up 21-0 with 2:00 left in the half.
Dorados defense put a hard lick on Falcons running back Samuel Delgado forcing a fumble.
Chance Cassel recovered the ball on the Catalina Foothills 41 yard-line.
First snap of the possession, Caden Goldtooth hit Daylon Beck in the right corner of the end zone for a 41-yard touchdown. Point after was no good and the Dorados led 27-0 with 1:14 left in the half.
Looking to get some points on the board before half time, Catalina Foothills’ Austin Bourn went to the air with a pass intended for senior Kincaid Bergthold. The pass was intercepted by Canyon del Oro defender Chase Laux for a pick six. The two-point conversion was successful. Dorados go to the locker-room up 35-0.
Canyon del Oro’s Kayden Luke didn’t let a half time break stop his mojo. With 5:41 left in the third quarter Luke found the end zone on a 14-yard run. His fourth of the game. Putting the Dorados up 42-0.
Luke who was unavailable for the previous two games was happy to be back on the field with his teammates. ” This is the dream, this is a dream come true right here. Sometimes it’s all we got”
And on his preparation on getting back to playing football. “This game was personal for me, this game is all I have, this is it, this is it right here, this is all I have.”
Luke continued “I came into this game thinking, well we are going to see how this plays out and the first play came out I was like yeah, I’m mean tonight. No holding back and that’s it. That’s the end of the story.”
Catalina Foothills offense got some rhythm going when Austin Bourn found Cole Revis for a big gain down to the Canyon del Oro 10-yard line.
Revis found the corner of the end zone for a Falcons touchdown, cutting the Dorados lead to 42-6 with 8:25 left in the game.
Canyon del Oro substituted in junior quarter back Tristen McClelland (two of two for 25 yards and one touchdown). McClelland, who started the previous two games for the Dorados due to Caden Goldtooth being unavailable, sent a floater to senior wide receiver Zack Rogowski (3 catches for 46 yards and one touchdown). Rogowski, grabbed an athletic, awe-inspiring one-handed catch at the corner of the endzone for the touchdown, putting the Dorados up 49-6.
Catalina Foothills offense showed glimpses of getting going, but the drives were stopped by turnovers and a tough Dorado defense.
Running back Samuel Delgado ran for 47 yards on 9 carries, quarter back Austin Bourn was 12 of 20 with 157 yards and receiver Cole Revis grabbed 5 catches for 93 yards leading the Falcons offense.
Falcons head coach Daniel Sainz reflecting on the matchup after the game, “They battled until the end and it’s great to see that part. That’s just a very talented football team. Front line is incredible huge size, and they do what they do really well, threw the ball well tonight.”
“Any time we had a chance to claw back in we just couldn’t make that play. They took it to us a little bit. We’ve got a young team and hopefully we can learn from this experience. Take the weight room a little more seriously.”
Canyon del Oro banked 395 total yards on offense while Catalina Foothills had 208.
Dorados next travel to Douglas to face the Bulldogs on Friday, October 14th at 7:00 pm.
Falcons will host Amphi on Friday, October 14th at 7:00 pm.
