Former Walden Grove standout Gabe Escalera won his second straight golf outing for Hastings College when he shot a 4-under-par 212 at the Blue River Classic Event to force a playoff where he made a 15-foot birdie putt for the victory in Lincoln, Nebraska. Escalera won the Maverick Invitational with a 7-under 137 in Minnesota last week.
Former Salpointe standout Taylor Powell is a linebacker coach for Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas. Powell helped lead the Lancers to a state championship in 2013 and he played at NAU and he helped lead Sacramento State to a Big Sky championship as a grad student in 2021.
The 2023 Pima County Sports Hal of Fame Class includes Tyler DeBerry, Carla Garrett, Rich Hall, Dan Hicks, Todd Holthaus, Jeff Kiewel, Ashley Monceaux-Valenzuela, Heather Moore-Martin, Willie Morales, Marty Parker, Stacy Redondo Santa Cruz, Tom Wiedenbauer, 1991 Salpointe Girls Soccer Team and the 1973 Cactus Little League All-Stars. The induction banquet is slated for Sunday, November 12 at 12:30 pm at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park.

Named one of “Arizona’s Heart & Sol” by KOLD and Casino del Sol, Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014, he was awarded the Ray McNally Award in 2017 and a 2019 AZ Education News recognition. Andy was named an Honorary Flowing Wells Caballero in 2019, became a member of the Sunnyside Los Mezquites Cross Country Hall of Fame in 2021 and he was a member of the Amphi COVID-19 Blue Ribbon Committee.
