American Legion: Tucson drops region game to Utah, will play California on Friday

Fairfield, CA: August 7-11

Tucson fell to Wellsville, Utah 10-9 in the second round of the American Legion West Regional taking place in Fairfield, California on Thursday. The loss moved the Post 7 Moondogs to the elimination phase where the team will face Clovis, California on Friday.

Tucson (1-1) beat New Mexico 9-5 on Wednesday to advance to the game with Utah (2-0) and Clovis (1-1) lost to Hawaii 7-3. California beat Nevada 4-0 to stay alive on Thursday. Utah will face Texas (2-0) Friday night. Tucson needs to win to advance to the semifinal round. The host team, Fairfield (1-1) and Hawaii (1-1) are also alive in the elimination bracket.

Tucson led Utah 6-2 after four innings but Utah exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth to take control of the game. Uziel Castillo went 2 for 4 with three RBIs for Tucson and Jorge Castro went 2 for 2. Utah had four earned runs in the game.
