
The Pima Community College men’s basketball team improved to 22-0 overall and 11-0 in the ACCAC with an 83-71 win at Glendale on Wednesday night.
The Aztecs have won 23 straight games dating to last year’s third-place game in the NJCAA Division II tournament.
They are 57-1 over the last two seasons and are on a 52-game regular-season winning streak.
Pima distanced itself behind scoring runs in the second half against Glendale (14-7, 5-5).
The Aztecs and the Gauchos came out for the second half answered each other on their first three possessions.
With the game tied at 47 with 16:47 left, they went scoreless for the next four minutes.
The Gauchos took the lead at 49-47 with 12:26 left but sophomore Isaac Johnson quickly scored on a layup to tie the game.
The Aztecs held Glendale scoreless again for another 4:05 as they went on a 14-0 run. Freshman Isaiah Hill (formerly of Pueblo and Premier Prep Academy) scored seven points during the stretch as they led 61-49.
A Glendale 3-pointer cut Pima’s lead to 66-58 but the Aztecs scored six straight points and later got back-to-back 3-pointers from freshman Rowan McKenzie and sophomore Mason Hunt to make it 78-60. The Aztecs never lost the double-digit advantage for the rest of the game.
The Aztecs led by as many as eight points in the first half at 29-21 after Hill converted on a 3-point play. Pima was up 38-32 at halftime and outscored the Gauchos 45-39 in the second half.
Hill scored a team-high 22 points as he went 9 for 16 from the field and 4 for 8 from beyond the arc. He fell short of a triple-double adding eight rebounds and eight assists.
Hunt finished with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds along with three assists while Johnson added 15 points and eight rebounds.
McKenzie and sophomore Brock Mendoza each scored 11 points. McKenzie had six rebounds and six assists while Mendoza grabbed six bounds.
The Aztecs will next play at Mesa on Saturday at 4 p.m.
