
The Pima Community College men’s and women’s track & field team finished their 2026 indoor regular season schedule Tuesday with a couple of school records broken at the Pima Indoor Multi’s Meet at the West Campus Aztec Track.
Sophomore Cedric Cade broke the Pima Indoor school record in the heptathlon with 5,369 points, beating out Reece Gardner’s record of 5112 points set in 2022.
Sophomore Hannah Droeg broke the school indoor record in the pentathlon after she finished in first place with a total of 3,366 points. Her total toppled Jackie Trice’s record of 3,328 points set in 2023. Droeg is now No. 2 in the nation in the pentathlon.
She earned first place and new personal records in the 800 meters (2:30.53), shot put (10.47 meters, 34-feet, 4.25-inches) and the high jump (1.61 meters, 5-feet, 3.25-inches).
Sophomore Layla Konski (Ironwood Ridge) took second place with a total of 3,071 points. Her total put her No. 5 on the Pima indoor career list and No. 5 in the nation.
She took first place in the long jump at 5.18 meters (17-0) and earned new PRs in the 800 meters (2:35.16), shot put (8.59 meters, 28-2.25) and the 60-meter hurdles (9.29).
Cade took first place in all the events and earned new personal records in the pole vault (4.66 meters, 15-feet, 3.5-inches), 60-meter hurdles (8.42), long jump (7.29 meters, 23-11) and the 60-meter dash (7.03). He earned NJCAA national qualifiers in the high jump, long jump and pole Vault.
Freshman James Jerusalem (Catalina) took second place with a total of 3,875 as he earned his national qualifier for the heptathlon. He earned PRs in two events; the pole vault (3.16 meters, 10-4.25) and the shot put (8.81 meters, 28-11).
Freshman Andrew Schmier also qualified for indoor nationals after he took third place with a total of 2,850 points.
The men and women Aztecs will next compete at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships on Friday and Saturday at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan.
SOFTBALL
The Aztecs’ softball team (17-2) stepped away from ACCAC Division II play on Tuesday for a doubleheader at Eastern Arizona College (10-3).
The Aztecs bounced back in the second game to earn a split with the Gila Monsters.
Sophomore Julissa Lopez (Tucson) finished the day 4 for 7 with five RBIs and two runs while fellow sophomore Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside) went 3 for 6 with two RBIs and a run.
Freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside) was 4 for 8 with a run and freshman Alyssa Aguirre (Sabino) went 3 for 7 with an RBI and two runs.
Sophomore Belen Camacho (Pueblo) suffered her first loss of the season. Freshman Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro) got the win in the second game.
Game 1: Eastern Arizona 8, (9) Pima 7
The Aztecs took a 7-0 lead but the Gila Monsters scored eight unanswered to win the first game.
Lopez hit a three-run double to clear the bases in the first inning, bringing around Aguirre, sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View) and sophomore Jiselle Nunez (Tucson) to put the Aztecs ahead 3-0.
Lopez scored on Lopez-Bedoy’s RBI single to cap the inning.
The Aztecs tacked on three more runs in the secvond inning. Freshman Isabel Rodriguez (Walden Grove) hit an RBI single to plate fellow freshman Isabel Mendoza (Cienega) and Lopez drove in Aguirre and Rodriguez with a two-run triple to make it 7-0.
The Aztecs had four hits the rest of the game.
The Gila Monsters scored three runs in each the third and fourth innings and took the lead with two runs in the sixth.
The Aztecs stranded two runners on base in the seventh inning.
Lopez finished 3 for 4 with five RBIs and a run. Aguirre went 1 for 3 with two runs while Rodriguez was 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run. Mendoza finished 2 for 4 with a run and Lopez-Bedoy was 1 for 3 with an RBI
Camacho (5-1) took the loss as she pitched all six innings, giving up eight runs on 14 hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Game 2: (9) Pima 6, Eastern Arizona 4
The Aztecs held off an Eastern Arizona rally in the seventh inning to get the win.
Down 2-0 in the third inning and with two outs, Lopez hit a double, which was followed by Nunez’s two-run home run to right field (first homer of the season) to tie the game at 2-2.
Lopez-Bedoy put the Aztecs ahead in the fourth inning with a lead-off home run to right field to make it at 3-2.
Figueroa added to Pima’s lead with an RBI single in the sixth inning to score freshman Kayla Hendrix (Canyon del Oro).
Pima loaded the bases in the seventh inning with one out as Hendrix hit a sacrifice fly to bring in pinch runner Angelina Dehler (Empire). Aguirre followed with an RBI single to score Ponce as Pima took a 6-2 advantage.
Machado got the tying run to ground out to Ponce at first base to end the game after the Gila Monsters scored two runs in the seventh.
Nunez finished the game going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Lopez-Bedoy went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run while Hendrix was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run. Aguirre and Figueroa each finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and Lopez was 1 for 3 with a run. Ponce was 2 for 4 with a run.
Machado (5-0) got the win as she pitched a complete game, giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
The Aztecs will get back to ACCAC play Saturday when they play at No. 13 Phoenix College. First game starts at noon.
