Only four months after surpassing 1,000 points in her basketball career at Amphi, senior Monica Verrett earned her first state championship in track and field.

She achieved a personal-best mark of 38′ 3.75″ in the triple jump on May 16 at Mesa Community College.

The performance followed a first-place finish in the triple jump and long jump at the AIA Division III meet a week prior. Her winning marks in those events were 36′ 8″ in the triple jump and 17′ 10″ in the long jump.

Overall this spring, Verrett achieved 16 first-place finishes in various meets in the 100-meter dash, long jump and triple jump.

The success came after Verrett concluded her stellar four-year varsity career in basketball. She led the Panthers to the state tournament the last two seasons as a point guard. The program earned its first victory in the state playoffs in the 2024-25 season with Verrett as a captain. She finished with 1,092 points, 528 steals and 251 assists in her career.

A distinct talent, Verrett was the lone female from Southern Arizona to place first in the AIA Track and Field State Championship.

For her performance, Verrett is the Jet Sports Female Athlete of the Month for May.
