Post 132 Sunnyside Crunch, comprised of Sunnyside High School players, will begin competition in the American Legion West Regional at Fairfield, Calif., on Wednesday against Clovis (Calif.), and a major reason why the team from the Southside of Tucson has gone this far is the play of first baseman Pedro Lopez.
According to assistant coach Jesus Hernandez, Lopez leads the team in almost every offensive category — doubles, triples, RBIs and batting average. He had multi-hit games 13 times in 16 games in July for Post 132 Sunnyside Crunch.
Lopez, a senior, is coming off a stellar performance in the spring for the Blue Devils, batting .349 with two home runs, two triples, four doubles, 26 RBIs and 20 runs.
For his performance in July, including when he was a catalyst for his team in the American Legion State Tournament, Lopez is worthy of the Jet Sports Training Male Athlete of the Month.
