A.J. Bramlett knows all about basketball development from his gradual improvement during his career at Arizona to currently mentoring young prospects with his business venture in his native Albuquerque.
Bramlett, founder of the basketball academy Dream Center and Run the Walk in Albuquerque, can relate to how a burgeoning talent can flourish.
“I went through a lot of the same things at Arizona that Tarczewski is going through,” Bramlett said this week when reached about the jersey retirement of his close friend Jason Terry.
“I also played with a bunch of talent around me and it took a while to be able to break out offensively. The important thing is to do exactly what he has to do for the team. His time will come.”

Bramlett was counted on by Lute Olson to be a rebounding and defensive threat in the middle, especially with Arizona boasting the perimeter talent of Terry, Mike Bibby, Miles Simon and Michael Dickerson.
Tarczewski is in the same situation with T.J. McConnell, Stanley Johnson, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and his backcourt mate, Brandon Ashley, expected to take most of the shots.
In the last three games, Tarczewski has averaged 8 field goal attempts and has converted 62.5 percent of them. In the previous 23 games, he attempted an average of only 4.9 shots and made 57 percent of them.
Against USC last night, he made 6 of his 11 field-goal opportunities.
After a 1-of-6 performance at ASU on Feb. 7, highlighted by missed opportunities inside with missed shots and the mishandling of the basketball, Tarczewski has turned things around.
“He felt terrible,” Miller said in the postgame press conference last night after Tarczewski’s 15-point, nine-rebound performance. “Kaleb is very self-critical. He cares a lot. Sometimes when you’re hard-working, diligent, and you care about your performance, you can also once in a while lose your confidence and I think that happened to him. It happened to him prior to that game (at ASU) but it all seemed to fester on that Saturday afternoon.
“But his response is what you would want. He’s gotten back to work. He’s watched some extra film. To me, he has a renewed sense of confidence. One of the points I made to Kaleb is don’t judge yourself by the points you score. There’s so many things that he does that are valuable for winning that you don’t see in the box score. You can sometimes get away from that when you’re not scoring. But I think he’s in a good place right now.”
Bramlett echoed Miller’s words, mentioning Tarczewski does all that is asked of him.
“I’ve been watching Tarczewski and Ashley closely,” Bramlett said. “What I like about Tarczewski is he is a big rock in the middle. He affects a lot of things with his defense.
“He still has a high ceiling in my opinion. I can see that he has the work ethic and desire to get where he needs to be. He’ll get there.”
