All three phases (offense, defense and special teams) performed well at USC for Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez. Not well enough for a victory but encouraging nonetheless.
The Wildcats earned four helmet stickers, represented by each element.
The special teams were responsible for two of them. Twice Arizona tackled USC within its 20-yard line on a kickoff and Tyrell Johnson returned a kickoff 56 yards to the USC 41 in the fourth quarter.
The offense put together 12 plays of at least 12 yards, including three on the last drive that cut USC’s lead to 38-30 with 10 seconds left.
And the defense forced USC into five three-and-outs that resulted with a punt. That’s nine over the last two weeks. Arizona needs to produce at least five against No. 10 Utah on Saturday to keep the score close.
In Arizona’s five losses, it has amassed only 18 stickers. In its five victories, the total is 43. Earning eight stickers against the Utes might be enough. Anything less and it could be a long night.
