The Lancers and Mustangs are meeting for the first time since 2006 – a 50-2 victory by Salpointe. The Mustangs only had two playoff appearances prior to that meeting but they have qualified six out of the last seven years with playoff losses coming to Tucson-area teams Canyon del Oro (2010), Nogales (2012) and Catalina Foothills last year in the quarterfinal round.

The team has a 41-6 record dating back to the beginning of the 2014 season.

Junior QB Keegan Freid leads the Mustangs with 2,785 yards passing and 35 TDs. He also has 651 yards rushing with another 11 TDs. Drake Flores has 706 yards rushing with seven TDs and Derick Bangle has 462 yards rushing with 13 TDs.

Angel Ruiz has 1,450 yards receiving with 21 TDs, Jay Anderson has 623 yards receiving with five TDs and James Hansen has 566 yards receiving with six TDs. Bobby Ramirez has 107 tackles, Gavin Chaddock has 68 tackles, Brody Webb has 63 tackles and Hunter Olson has 57. Webb has 10.5 sacks and Arrick Dowe has six interceptions.

Salpointe won a Division II title in 2013 to go along with a runner-up finish in 1981 and 1991. The state championship victory over Chaparral was played in Arizona Stadium, the scheduled site for this year’s final game. The Lancers lost in the semifinal round last year.

The Lancers are 21-4 over the last two years with only one of the losses coming to a 4A opponent.

QB Rodrigo Nieto has 1,030 yards passing with 12 TDs and 386 yards rushing. Bijan Robinson has 1,556 yards rushing with 24 TDs, Mario Padilla has 556 yards rushing with 11 TDs and Ruben Morales has 232 yards rushing.
