Tucson Rattlers 17U team opens tournament in Las Vegas with victory

The Tucson Rattlers 17U team continued their success this summer with a 48-26 win over Colorado Swish tonight in the NCAA Super Showcase at the Tarkanian Basketball Academy in Las Vegas.

The Rattlers, comprised of Tucson-area high school girls basketball standouts, earlier this month went 5-1 and lost by one point in their division title game of the Nike Tournament of Champions in Chicago.

In tonight’s game, the Rattlers had almost as many steals (15) as they did assists (17). Pueblo senior guard Summer Fox, who averaged 4.2 steals per game in Chicago, had four steals tonight as did Catalina Foothills senior guard Emily Chua. Ironwood Ridge junior forward Bella Hamel had three steals and nine rebounds.

Tanque Verde senior forward Nikya Orange tallied 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Marana junior post player Bella Muscoreil had eight points on 4-of-6 shooting.

The Rattlers play two games Tuesday — 10 a.m. against Cal Storm Elite and 1 p.m. against South Vancouver Island.

The Rattlers’ 16U is also playing in the tournament at Las Vegas. The team split its two games Monday and will play two more games Tuesday — 2 p.m. against the Utah Raiders and 4 p.m. against Lady Heat.
