Randolph beat Mountain Pines twice to capture the Junior League baseball state championship at Tempe.
Randolph won 9-6 on Thursday night in a completion of the championship game that started Wednesday but was stopped because of rain with Randolph leading 5-2 in the third inning.
Randolph has qualified for the West Regional Junior League Tournament that starts Tuesday at Bend, Ore. Randolph’s first game is next Thursday against Northern California at 10 a.m.
Randolph reached the championship game of the state tournament from the elimination bracket.
It won seven straight games facing elimination, including Tuesday’s earlier game 9-3 against Mountain Pines, which advanced through the winners bracket with a 4-0 record.
One of those wins for Mountain Pines was an 18-17 victory over Randolph in the opening round of the tournament.
Gabriel Leon led Randolph with four RBIs in Thursday’s 9-6 win. His two-run double in the third inning helped Randolph take an 8-4 lead.
After Mountain Pines cut the lead to 8-6 in the top of the fourth, Randolph reliever Aydan Galvan settled down and did not allow a run in the last three innings.
He allowed three hits in four innings while striking out three.
Carmelo Benitez had two hits and an RBI and Aiden Carmargo and Cesar Hernandez each drove in a run.
