The Tucson Saguaros swept a doubleheader on Sunday from the Roswell (N.M.) Invaders at Kino Memorial Stadium to clinch the Pecos League Mountain Division regular-season championship by percentage points over the Alpine (Texas) Cowboys.
The Saguaros are 34-13 (winning percentage of .723) and the Cowboys are 36-16 (.692).
Tucson begins a best-of-three quarterfinal series with the fourth-place Garden City (Kansas) Wind (30-20) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Kino Memorial Stadium.
Alpine will host the third-place Trinidad (Colo.) Triggers (30-19) in the other quarterfinal series.
The winners of those series meet at the higher seed for a best-of-three semifinal series starting Friday.
The Mountain Division champion will face the Pacific Division champion in a best-of-three Pecos League championship series starting Aug. 9.
Tucson won a couple of pitchers’ duels in their victories over Roswell on Sunday.
Empire graduate Jaymon Cervantes, an assistant coach at Sahuaro, struck out four, walked three and allowed five hits in 4 1/3 innings in the first game.
Sahuaro alum Travis Cole, who completed a career at Christian Brothers University in Memphis in May, pitched the last three innings and did not allow a run. He struck out three with no walks and allowed two hits.
BJ Minarcin, New England College, had the walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth for the Saguaros.
In the second game, won by Tucson 3-2, the Saguaros scored all the runs they needed in the first inning.
Ryan Murphy, formerly of Rowan College, had a bases-clearing double.
Brendan Konal (Middle Georgia State) got the win pitching six solid innings, allowing four hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Myles White (Ottawa Arizona) pitched the seventh inning for the save.
