Tucson Saguaros over Grand Junction 14-2

The Tucson Saguaros improved to 10-8 on the year after taking care of the Grand Junction Razorback Suckers 14-2 Friday night at Kino Stadium. This is the third victory in a row for Tucson and the second over Grand Junction (8-6) as part of a homestand that continues Saturday and Sunday against the new team from Colorado.

The Saguaros compete in the Mountain Division South of the Pecos League and Grand Junction is the Mountain Division North. Founded in 2010, the Saguaros starting competing in the Pecos League in 2016 and the team picked up their fourth league championship last year after beating the San Rafael Pacifics 2-1 in the best-of-three championship series.

Former Sahuaro standout Travis Cole joined former Sabino standout Antonio Fernandez and former Empire standout Jaymon Cervantes in pregame ceremonies Friday night to celebrate the 2025 championship. The trio joined current player-manager Gavy Perez-Torres in throwing out the first pitch against Grand Junction. Perez-Torres was the MVP of the Pecos League Mountain Division last year (.364, 13 home runs, 74 RBIs and 18 Stolen bases) and he replaced Sean McNeill as the Tucson skipper this spring. McNeill is now the bench and pitching coach for the Staten Island FerryHawks of the Atlantic League.

The current Saguaro roster includes Cervantes and former Pueblo standout Angel Faras. Former St. Augustine standout Alex Gamez saw pitching action for Grand Junction.

In the game Friday night, Tucson took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second and then a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. A pinch-hit grand slam from Jorge Carrero in the bottom of the seventh was part of a seven-run explosion that ultimately led to a 14-2 victory.

Trent Malone added three RBIs and a triple, Sloan Laird went 3-4 with an RBI and Perez-Torres had a two-RBI double. Laird also collected three stolen bases. Demitrius DiMatteo (7.0) got the start on the mound and he got the victory on seven innings of work. RMani Adams (1.0) and Perez-Torres (1.0) also saw action.

For Grand Junction, Wyatt Cunningham and Grant Devecsery collected and RBI each in the top of the eighth and Brandon Zanni had a double in the game. Josh Stoll (4.1) got the start for Grand Junction, Gamez (1.1), Juan Jamie (.2) and Josh Swales (1.2) also threw.

The two teams will meet again tonight at 7 p.m. at Kino Stadium.
