Mica Mountain senior Soso Okpara was a significant reason why the Thunderbolts advanced all the way to the 4A state championship match on Nov. 16 against Estrella Foothills in Phoenix.

Okpara earned the 4A Conference Offensive Player of the Year honor in addition to being an all-conference first-team selection.

She was the catalyst for the Thunderbolts (27-11) advancing to the state championship match for the first time in the program’s brief three-year history.

The Air Force Academy signee ranked No. 4 in the state in hitting percentage (.436) and was 17th in blocked shots (108).

She was also one of the top players in the state with 300 kills, including nine in the championship match against Estrella Foothills.

In addition to her volleyball exploits, Okpara is an honor student with a GPA of 5.16.

For all of her accomplishments, most noticeably in November, when Mica Mountain made a run to a potential state title, Okpara is the Jet Sports Training Female Athlete of the Month.
