Two AP Top 25 voters actually moved Arizona Wildcats up in this week’s rankings despite loss to USC

Larry Vaught of the Dansville (Ky.) Advocate Messenger ranked Arizona’s football team lowest last week at No. 19 but moved the Wildcats two spots up this week despite the loss to USC

In this zany college football season, one in which no dominant Pac-12 team exists and home teams are 1-8 in the last nine conference games, Arizona actually moved up in the voting of two AP Top 25 pollsters despite losing to USC at Arizona Stadium on Saturday.

The Wildcats, ranked No. 16 this week after going from unranked to No. 10 last week, improved their standing in the voting of Adam Jude of the Seattle Times and Larry Vaught of the Danville (Ky.) Advocate Messenger.

Jude moved Arizona from No. 14 last week to No. 13 this week.

Try to explain this one: Vaught, who had Arizona the lowest among voters last week at No. 19, rated the Wildcats two spots higher at No. 17 this week.

Maybe Vaught was caught up in the Kentucky basketball program starting its practices for the 2014-15 season and did not notice Arizona lost?

The voters who classify under the “Not Buying Arizona” category are Los Angeles Daily News reporter Scott Wolf, who reported on USC’s 28-26 victory, and Charles Davis of Fox Sports.

Davis dropped Arizona 15 spots to No. 20. Wolf had Arizona No. 10 last week and did not rank the Wildcats this week despite having FCS power North Dakota State at No. 24 and Marshall at No. 25.

Arizona was also unranked on the ballot of Logan Lowery of the Northeast (Miss.) Daily Journal, but Lowery did not have the Wildcats ranked high to begin with. He ranked Arizona No. 17 last week after the Wildcats upset then-No. 2 Oregon in Eugene, Ore.
