Sunnyside Unified School District superintendent Steve Holmes suited up with the state champion wrestling team for a preseason workout Tuesday at Sunnyside High School.
Holmes, Sunnyside Class of 1987, joined the wrestlers in the weight room. Not skipping a beat, Holmes worked out with about 40 student-athletes.
Bench presses and squats were just a few of the workouts that Holmes performed. Working alongside state champions, MMA fighters, and future Olympic hopefuls, the 50-year-old Holmes held his own.
“He was right there with us. He was pushing us and we were pushing him. It was really awesome to see. After a few minutes, we knew that he was here to work out for real,” said state-champion senior Jesse Ybarra.
Sunnyside coach Anthony Leon said that it all started with a challenge to the superintendent.
“I was joking with him and told him that he could use a workout, and that he is welcome at ours anytime,” Leon said. “The next day he showed up in full workout gear and was ready to go.”
Will he roll on the mat next time?
Sunnyside opens defense of its Division II state championship on Nov. 27 at home in a three-team meet with Desert View and Empire.
