Arizona Wildcats guard Mayes sets sight on successful senior season with 20-20 vision

AZHOOPS20

The No. 20 Stoudamire-Arizona lineage continues with Jordin Mayes for one more season.

Mayes’ father Darryel Mayes mentored Damon Stoudamire when Damon starred at Woodrow Wilson High School in Portland, Ore., before the prolific scoring guard attend Arizona. The families remained close after Darryel, a former UNLV player, moved his family to California.

Mayes, a senior, received the blessing from Damon and cousin Salim to wear their No. 20 for the Wildcats when he signed with Sean Miller in 2010.

Mayes and Damon reunite this season. Damon, fifth on the UA scoring list with 1,849 points, is in his first season as an assistant with the Wildcats. Stoudamire’s big-brother type of relationship with Mayes is one of the three most significant ways his hire impacts the UA this season.

The others are Stoudamire’s recruiting identity on the West coast and his ability to bridge the past with the present (Lute Olson to Sean Miller).

Mayes is a model of perseverance, never giving up on his UA career despite starting only 16 of his 102 games with Arizona. The Wildcats need his senior leadership and ability to make the pivotal three-pointer this season. He is certainly the X-factor with Aaron Gordon, Nick Johnson and Co.

The chart above shows Mayes’ three-point shooting percentages in his first three seasons. Most noticeable is how his improved shooting late in the season as a freshman in 2010-11 and last season enhanced the UA’s ability to go deep into the NCAA tournament.

Other than the Stoudamires and Mayes, uniform No. 20 was also graced by Craig McMillan, the first McDonald’s All-American recruited to Arizona.

McMillan, who scored 1,174 points with Arizona, ranks sixth on the UA career chart with a three-point percentage of .411. Salim Stoudamire is second with a .458 percentage. Steve Kerr tops the list at .573.
